”Han is considered one of the pioneers of West Coast perfumery, one who challenged its colonial, Eurocentric foundations. Over the years, her independent fragrance line Yosh (the Chinese character for which means fragrant) has been a staple at high-end shops like Barneys, Liberty London, Anthropologie, and SF’s Ministry of Scent.”

PODCASTS

Perfumer, Sommelier, Activist and Clairvoyant Yosh Han is in the Perfume Room today. Yosh has been at the forefront of decolonizing scent and her activism has led to major change in the industry; across the world, major stakeholders are officially re-classifying the o-word to amber (or ambré). We discuss why this change is necessary, the progress thus far, as well as how you (yes YOU!) can get involved. Yosh also vulnerably discusses a low point in her perfume journey including a time when she essentially lost her sense of smell, why vanilla is a low-hanging fruit, and of course the connection between clairvoyance, auras, and scent (which may or may not include a live aura reading). Oh and buckle up because I accidentally say creamy a lot; moist, you’re next! I also discuss the tragedy that is Atelier Cologne.

FRAGS MENTIONED: Diptyque Volutes, Parfum de Marly Meliora, Juan M. Pérez Lime, Eau de Yosh: Ginger Ciao, Sombre Negra, Sottile 1.61, König, Atelier Cologne

Spora Health podcast - Decolonizing Scent with Yosh Han. In this episode of the Spora Health Link, founder Dan Miller is joined by Yosh Han, professional perfumer, to discuss the power of scent and the perfume industry's long history of eurocentrism and racism, particularly obvious in it's use of terms like 'orientalism.' Yosh believes that scent is a representation of culture that comes with biases that are rarely evaluated. She also believes that scent is a way we can all upgrade our physical spaces and even feel more at home in our own skin.

I am a perfume snob. I tend to buy fragrance from brands with impeccable pedigree. My pick from the YOSH range is Sombre Negra, a smouldering, dark fragrance. It’s the perfect date night fragrance – built to impress and cause a swoon or two. It is so much more than it seems, very complex and very sophisticated.” - Samantha Taylor, DMARGE magazine
